Training Your Horse Introduction

This is just one method of training your horse after you buy from the sales ring. Other stables may do it differently
After buying from the sales ring you get 10 training runs (After this its just 2 per day)
This method tries to maximise these 10 runs to evaluate the "adds", going preferences and distance.
However, I suggest to train at 2 1/2M, this will be explained later when trying to evaluate the horses best distance.

Training Your Horse Step 01

Add Shoes (Shoes NEVER have a negative effect, so can be applied at the start.)
Train at 2 1/2M Firm
I have chosen firm as its the most advanced at 70%

Training 001 Training 002

Note Time: 5.22.46

Training 002

Training Your Horse Step 02

Add Blinkers

Training 006

Run at the same going and distance (2 1/2M Firm)
Note Time: 5.22.40
Difference +0:00:06 (5.22.46 - 5.22.40) not enough to make a conclusion
In my opinion, anything over 0:00:40 is significant, however, be carefull of jumping to conclusions as there can be big variances in training times

Training 007

Training Your Horse Step 03

Remove Blinkers
Add Cheekpieces

Training 008

Run at the same going and distance (2 1/2M Firm)

Training 009

Note Time: 5.22.34
Difference 0:00:12 (5.22.46 - 5.22.34) not enough to make a conclusion

Training Your Horse Step 04

Remove Cheekpieces
Add Tongue Tie

Training 010

Run at the same going and distance (2 1/2M Firm)

Training 011

Note Time: 5.21.77
Difference 0:00:69 (5.22.46 - 5.21.77) significant (>0.04) so I can assume for now that the horse improves for the Tongue Tie

Training Your Horse Step 05

Next, to try and work out the horses preferred distances.
Do a PW at 2 1/2M Firm, with the preferred Adds. (Shoes, Blinkers, Cheekpieces and Tongue Tie)
In this example, it was decided to leave all the Adds on, even though trains were not conclusive.
All the Adds will need to be re-tested at a later stage.

This time note the Fitness Percentage remaining - 13%
The % stamina after a PW or a race will indicate your horses preferred distance.
The ideal % stamina after a PW or after a race is considered to be beween 10% and 16%.
This is not to say that your horse can not run well or win with stamina greater than 20% and less than 9%, however the horse will not run optimally. Most horses can typically run at more than one distance.
This is just my opinion and could very well be wrong, I encourage you to do your own research.
I can estimate from this that the stamina after 2 1/4M will be approx 16% or 17% and the stamina after 2 3/4M will be approx 10% or 9%
The further distance a horse runs the less the remaining stamina will be and visa versa.
I will do futher PW's on another day to confirm the remaing stamina at these other distances.

In this exapmle the remaining stamina was 13% and it is obvious that this is a 2 1/4 to 2 3/4M horse
It is not always as obvious as this and you may end up with 9% stamina, this will indicate that the horse is a sprinter, 2M and maybe 2 1/4M.
Or you may end up with something in the region of 28% stamina, this will indicate that the horse is a stayer, 3M and maybe 3 1/4M.

Training Your Horse Step 06

Return to the "Training" page
I will check out the horse on the other goings.

Training 015

7 Training Runs completed

Training Your Horse Step 07

With the remaining runs I am going to recheck the Adds

Training 018

Training Your Horse Step 08

All 10 first day runs complete.
This is a difficult horse to work out from just these 10 TT's
I will need to re-check the Blinkers.
I will need to re-check the Cheek Pieces.
I will need to re-check the Tongue Tie.
I will check the Stamina remaining at 2 1/4M and 2 3/4M.

To get an idea of the horses ability I can go to >"Overview" >"Public Works"
I can see the best times of other yearlings at 2 1/2M
His only PW (5.20.32) so far is not in the top 100
Or, go to the horse training page click >"Training Records" and see the horses stars.
This horse has no stars and is a below average horse.
